Twelve Alaska cabin rentals, located in the White Mountains Recreation Area north of Fairbanks, are available through the Bureau of Land Management.
Though they are on a trail system, only one is near a road. A few can be reached by hiking, biking, boats and other means in summer, but most are practical to use only in the winter. It's a 7 mile hike from the road system to the nearest remote cabin and the farthest is 40 miles away. You can reach them by snow-machine or dog sled in winter. You can also use skis, snowshoes or other possible winter travel, of course. And if you are a skier, also check on other skiing options north of Fairbanks. Cabin Furnishings Supplied and Those You Supply: Bunk beds, a table and benches, cook stove, lantern, fire extinguisher, saw, ax, broom, wood stove and outhouse are furnished. You need to bring a propane fuel tank/cell for the lanterns and cook stoves. Bring extra lantern mantles, in case they've been damaged. Also bring candles, so you'll have light, if the lantern doesn't work. You'll have to either find firewood for the heating stove or bring it with you. Additional recommended supplies include maps and compass, matches, sleeping bag and pad, extra food items, water, and warm clothing.
