West PWS Coastal and Remote Cabins

Open June to September but the best time to go is July and August. It's had a chance to melt and get warm up there. You'll probably find some berries too if you go in the fall.

Turn on Crow Creek Road about 2 miles (3.22km) up Alyeska Road at Girdwood, which is on the Seward Highway, about 35 miles (56.33km) south of Anchorage. Crow Creek Road is 7 miles (11.27km) long and ends at the trailhead.

  • Find an Alaska Cabin Rental in West Prince William Sound Area: Because these Alaska cabin rentals are on the fjords, bays, lagoons and lakes of Prince William Sound, the weather is usually going to be quite cool, somewhat windy and can be foggy or rainy.

It also means seabirds and sealife viewing is abundant. In this area, you'll get excellent opportunities for viewing glaciers and mountains. Towns are almost non-existent in the area, so meeting someone out here is rare. Many locations can have several days of bad weather, so bring enough supplies for 2 to 5 days, in case you can't return when you planned.

  • Coghill Lake Cabin
  • Pigot Bay Cabin - is a 16'(4.88m) A-frame with loft. Sleeps 6 and has table, wood stove, splitting maul, crosscut saw, woodshed and outhouse. Has wood source but have to search for it. Bring drinking water, as it is difficult to get locally. Located on mainland, west of Port Wells (closer to Whittier than other cabins).

Access to this Alaska cabin rental is on steps up a 12-foot bluff, so has some great views! Bring your own boat for good exploration possibilities. Reachable by float plane from Anchorage, Seward or Cordova, or boat from Whittier.

Saltwater fishing for pink salmon in late summer, halibut, rockfish and you can find butter clams on gravel beaches at the head of the bay. Hunting in season for deer and bear. Wildlife viewing also includes mountain goats and a myriad of sealife but whales are not common.

  • Paulson Bay Cabin - is 12' x 14' (3.66m x 4.27m) log cabin. It sleeps 6 and has a table, wood stove, splitting maul, crosscut saw, covered woodshed and outhouse. Firewood is in the area.

There's a good view of Harvard Glacier at the end of College Fjord, which you can see from here. A 3/4 mile (1.21km) trail takes you to a creek north of the cabin. Bring your own boat for better exploration. Hiking is possible as there is little brush. Fishing for chum, pink salmon in late summer and halibut and shrimp. Hunting in season for bear and waterfowl. Besides bears, Sitka black-tailed deer bald eagles are also around.

  • Culross Passage Cabin - is 12' x 14' (3.66m x 4.27m). Sleeps 6 and has table, wood stove, splitting maul, crosscut saw, woodshed and outhouse. Has wood source but have to search for it. On the northwest side of Picturesque Cove on the mainland side of the Culross Island Passage, 1.5 miles (2.41km) up from the south entrance to the passage.

Try digging for steamer clams on the gravel beach at this Alaska cabin rental. Reachable by float plane from Anchorage or Cordova, or a 27 mile (43.45km) boat ride from Whittier. Use Alaska USGS map: Seward C4.

  • Harrison Lagoon Cabin - is 16' x 20' (4.88m x 6.1m). Sleeps 6 and has table, wood stove, splitting maul, crosscut saw, woodshed and outhouse. Has wood source but have to search for it.

An Alaska cabin rental with ramps, wide door and larger floor space. At low tide, you can get fresh water from Lagoon Creek, south of cabin. Reachable by float plane from Anchorage or Cordova, or boat the 34 miles (54.72km) from Whittier.

Located on mainland, west of Port Wells, 2 miles north of Hobo Bay. Bring your own boat or kayak for more exploration possibilities. Blueberries and salmonberries near cabin in Fall. Wildlife viewing includes black bear, Sitka black-tailed deer, bald eagles, seals, sea otter, sea lions, whales, porpoises and many seabirds. Fishing for pink salmon and shrimp could be good. Hunting in season for bears and waterfowl. Use Alaska USGS map: Seward D4.

  • Port Chalmers Cabin - is 12' x 14' (3.66m x 4.27m). Sleeps 6 and has table, wood stove, oil stove, splitting maul, saw, rainwater barrel, and outhouse.

Cabin is on southern end of Port Chalmers on northwest side of Montague Island. Reachable by float plane landing on the enclosed bay at high tide, from Anchorage, Seward or Cordova, or boat from Whittier or Cordova.

Chalmers River, north across the inlet is a major salmon fishing stream. Hunting in season for brown bear, Sitka black-tailed deer and waterfowl. Use Alaska Tide Table: Port Chalmers on Montague Island.

  • My Montague Island Story:

Another pilot and I flew to Montague Island and landed on the beach. It was a beautiful day and walking along the shore was like treasure hunting! There was a huge sea onion that was just lying there on the shore—about 12 feet long! I also saw a number of very large jelly-fish that had stayed on the shore when the tide went out, unfortunately for them.

Along with a few other 'treasures', I found an octagonal shaped, green glass bottle that had washed up on the shore. It was empty but still had the lid on it—not antique unfortunately, because the lid was plastic, but was from the orient. It had an oriental symbol imprinted in the lid.

Now, if you are a kid at heart, like me, you'd probably have enjoyed these 'finds' as much as I did!

  • San Juan Bay Cabin - is 14' x 16' (4.27m x 4.88m). Sleeps 6 and has table, wood stove, oil stove, splitting maul, saw, rainwater barrel and outhouse. Bring stove oil.

An Alaska cabin rental located on the Bay on the southwest end of Montague Island. Reachable by plane landing on beach at low tide. Cabin is 1/2 mile (0.8km) from beach. San Juan Creek, one mile south of cabin is where there is a lot of good salmon fishing.

Be aware of the tides, so you can return to the cabin when you planned. Use Alaska Tide Table: MacLeod Harbor on Montague Island.

  • Green Island Cabin - is 16' x 20' (4.88m x 6.1m). Sleeps 6 and has table, wood stove, oil stove, splitting maul, saw, rainwater barrel and outhouse. This Alaska cabin rental has one of the newest cabins and is fully wheelchair accessible.

Located on a forested strip of land that juts out, on the northwest side of the island. A narrow, shallow bay to the southwest and a cove to the northeast of the strip it is on, makes it a very scenic place.

East of the cabin is a creek with silver and pink salmon, cutthroat trout, and Dolly Varden. With a boat you could catch halibut and rockfish in the ocean but watch out for uncharted rocks. Green Island is a small island on the north side of Montague Island (mentioned above) and so is within Prince William Sound. Reachable by float plane from Anchorage, Seward or Cordova, or boat from Whittier.

  • If these are too remote for you, try some of the Alaska cabin rentals on the Kenai Peninsula...
