Alaska cabin rentals are available through all of the public land agencies. Many of these are old log cabins that have been abandoned for years and happen to be on public lands.
You'll also find recently built rental cabins, specifically for public use. All of these cabins have very minimal, rustic accommodations. But then, that is what you are looking for, right? These remote vacation cabin rentals give you a place to camp out and live like a pioneer! Since I spent a good part of my life 'living like a pioneer', I can totally relate to anyone wanting to do that. It's fun, even if it IS hard. But you are just going to get a small taste of it on your Alaskan vacation. So enjoy yourself! You'll be carrying water, splitting wood and making your meals on a camp stove—you won't even have electricity or a flush toilet! And DO take a little time to learn about Alaska's wildlife in preparation for a stay in a backwoods Alaska cabin rental. Any of the forest service or park rangers will be happy to answer questions, also. Hope Valley from Hiking Trail Road Find public Cabin Rentals in Fairbanks Area - These are winter vacation rentals that are available through the BLM in Fairbanks. Public Vacation Cabin Rentals in Chugach National Forest: Chugach National Forest has over 5 million acres of ground along Alaska's southern coastline. It includes the lands from the eastern half of the Kenai Peninsula, through all the fjords and islands of Prince William Sound, all the way to Kayak Island. That is southeast of the town of Cordova and the mouth of the Copper River. Within this HUGE territory are at least 40 Alaska forest service cabins available to rent as vacation cabins. Basic items YOU will have to provide: Food, mattresses, bedding, cooking utensils, firewood, oil if there is an oil stove, and most need some type of cook stove. In many places there are downed trees in the area that can be cut for firewood. In some cases, you can purchase firewood nearby. Otherwise, you have to bring it with you. Though most of these cabin rentals are near clear water streams that can be used for drinking, it is always suggested that you purify it in some way—it may not always be necessary, but it is safe! In other places, you'll need to bring water with you. Also, where there's water, there are mosquitoes, so bring mosquito repellent! Just remember that anything NOT listed as provided at each individual cabin, is something you'll have to bring with you, purchase, find, make, or do without! So check to see what's provided at each cabin before you make your decision. As in all backwoods camping, if no refuse container is available, then trash must be taken with you when you leave. This is not only to keep the place clean for the next campers, but also to prevent wildlife, especially bears, from hanging around! Location and Items Provided with Alaska Cabin Rentals: You'll find log cabin rentals and other recreation cabins in every imaginable place, but many are not reachable by road. Alaska cabin rentals that aren't near hiking trails are reachable by plane or boat. If a road is available, it will be mentioned also. Many cabin sites are near water, so kayaks, canoes, rafts and other non-motorized watercraft are always allowed for recreation. Some of the other activities available are also listed for each Alaska cabin rental site. Reservations for Forest Service Cabins in Alaska - Reservations are required.
