Alaska Campgrounds
In the Mountains of the Kenai

Alaska Campgrounds on the Seward Highway - from Portage to SEWARD on the Kenai Peninsula. Distances are approximate, measured from downtown Anchorage.

NOTE: USFS Campgrounds generally need reservations. They are often booked well in advance for the Kenai Peninsula, so reserve them as soon as you know your travel dates.

Alaska Campgrounds from the North End of the Kenai:

  • Bertha Creek USFS Campgrounds - has 12 campsites for campers or tents, but NO RVs. FEE-$14/night with 14 night limit. Has picnic sites, water, latrines, trash cans and bear-proof lockers. Rafting and kayaking on nearby Sixmile Creek but rough waters. A small loop campground, located 61.6 miles (99.14km) south of Anchorage, on Seward Highway.
  • Granite Creek USFS Campgrounds - a loop campground that has 19 campsites with pads up to 40 feet (12.19m), for tents to RVs. FEE - $14/night with 14 night limit. Has picnic sites, water, latrines, trash cans and bear-proof lockers. Fishing and hunting allowed. Located 64.1 miles (103.16km) south of Anchorage, on Seward Highway.
  • Porcupine USFS Campgrounds - has 24 campsites for camping trailers and tents with paved roads. FEE - $14/night with 14 night limit. Has picnic sites, water and latrines, but NO hook-ups. Near two hiking trails and has some scenic overlooks of Turnagain Arm. At about 72 miles (115.87km) south of Anchorage, or Milepost 56.7 Seward Highway, you'll reach the Hope Highway Junction. This Alaska Campground is located at Milepost 17.8 Hope Highway. NO reservations possible.

  • Tenderfoot Creek USFS Campgrounds - has 27 campsites (7 pull throughs) with pads up to 38' (11.58m) for tents to RVs. No hook-ups. FEE - $14/night with 14 night limit. Has picnic sites, water, latrines, trash cans and bear-proof lockers. A boat ramp is available for Upper Summit Lake. Located 81 miles (130.36km) south of Anchorage, at Milepost 46 on Seward Highway. NO reservations possible.
  • Trail River USFS Campgrounds - has 91 campsites (7 pull-throughs) with pads up to 40' (12.19m) for tents to RVs. No hook-ups. Ten are tent-only campsites. FEE - $18/night with 14 night limit. Has picnic sites, water, latrines, trash cans and bear-proof lockers. Located on Trail River Road, 1.1 miles (1.77km) from Highway. It's 102.8 miles (165.44km) south of Anchorage at MP 24.2, Seward Highway. A group site may be reserved at 'reservations' link above.
  • Ptarmigan USFS Campgrouds - has 16 campsites with pads up to 32' (9.75m). No hook-ups. FEE - $14/night with 14 night limit. Has picnic sites, water, latrines, trash cans. Fishing available. Located 103.7 miles south of Anchorage on the Seward Highway.
  • Primrose USFS Campgrounds - has 8 campsites, no hook-ups. FEE - $14/night with 14 night limit. Has picnic sites, water, latrines, trash cans, trail and a boat ramp on Kenai Lake. Located 110.1 miles south of Anchorage at Milepost 17 on the Seward Highway. NO reservations possible.
  • Alaska Campgrounds at Seward: FEES - $30/night for utility (water and electric hook-ups) RV sites, $15/night without utilities, $10/night for tents. Winter camping (Oct 1 - Apr 14) without utilities is $5.00/night. Check for current information at: City of Seward - SPRD, Parks & Campgrounds, PO Box 167, Seward, AK, 99664-0167.   • Spring Creek Campground - Quite a secluded, primitive campground. No drinking water available. At about Milepost 3, Seward Highway, turn east on Nash Road. Go 5 miles (8.06km) on Nash Road past the old lumber mill, and take the first right past Spring Creek. Drive to the water.
  • Forest Acres Municipal Campground - A somewhat secluded campground with large sites, latrines, recreation fields and a track for power dirt bikes. May have some low muddy areas, so vehicles are required to stay on the gravel. Located just south of Milepost 3 Seward Highway, turning west onto Hemlock, follow it to the park.
  • Waterfront Park - Has campsites for RVs up to 40 feet (12.19m), with or without hook-ups, and tent sites. Coin-operated showers available - $2. Dump station available. Located in downtown Seward. Follow the highway into town where it becomes 3rd Avenue, turn left of D Street. D Street becomes Ballaine Boulevard where the park is located.
  • Now that we've reached the Seward waterfront on Resurrection Bay, we'll have to turn around and go back up through the mountains to the Sterling Highway junction. Then we can find Alaska campgrounds along the Sterling Highway to Homer.
