Alaska fishing vacations IN THE CENTRAL REGION to VALDEZ - This follows the Tok Cutoff Highway to its junction with the Richardson Highway. Then follows the Richardson Highway to Valdez.
It includes side trips from these main highways and adds a few Alaska fishing vacation spots going north on the Richardson Highway as far as Paxson. It also includes fishing areas in Eastern Prince William Sound and the Cordova area which are not reachable by road. Milepost numbers on the Richardson Highway start from Valdez. Lake elevations are listed when above 1000 feet (304.8m). Porcupine Creek at SRS - At Mile 64 Tok Cut-off Highway near Nabesna Road. Fishing available in creek. Bearcub Lake - A 14-acre lake at around 2300' elevation. Has Arctic Grayling. Road access on easement, parking and boat ramp. At Milepost 70, north side of Tok Cut-off, several miles before you get to Nabesna Road. Alaska Fishing Vacation Opportunities in Wrangell St. Elias National Park - Take Nabesna Road into the Park (no entrance fee). Stop at Rufus Creek at Mile 6.1 for Dolly Varden, or Long Lake at Mile 22.9 for Grayling and Burbot. There are other lakes and creeks reachable with an ORV - get your permit and directions at the Ranger Station at the entrance of Nabesna Road. The Tok Cut-off Highway ends when it meets the Richardson Highway, just south of Gakona. Here are a few places for an Alaska Fishing Vacation, going as far as 60 miles (96.6km) NORTH on the Richardson highway (towards Fairbanks). Sourdough Creek at BLM Campground - At Mile 147.5 Richardson Highway. Has boat launch area and parking. Rainbow Trout, Grayling, Salmon fishing. Dick Lake - A 40-acre lake at elevation 2950'. Has short trail to lake. Has Arctic Char, Burbot, Arctic Grayling. At Mile 173.2 Richardson Highway, on east side of road, by narrow side road, no turnaround space. Paxson Lake at BLM Campground - At 3,890-acre lake at Mile 175 Richardson Highway. Has road access and boat launch. Not stocked but has wild population of Arctic Grayling, Burbot, King Salmon, Lake Trout, Rainbow Trout, Red Salmon and Whitefish. Alaska Fishing Vacations continuing SOUTH from the Tok Cut-off / Richardson Highway Junction: Dry Creek at SRS - At Mile 117.5 Richardson Highway, 4 miles north of Glennallen. Dry Creek flows into a tributary of the Tazlina River, which has Salmon, Rainbow Trout and possibly Grayling. Road access and campgrounds for even large RVs. Klutina River - At Mile 100 (Copper Center) this river crosses the highway. There is public access here and this is a major river for Salmon runs. Pippin Lake A 160-acre lake at elevation 1955'. Has trail access. Has Rainbow Trout. At Mile 82.5, west of Richardson Highway at Edgerton Highway Junction. To Chitina and on into Wrangell-St. Elias National Park - Taking the Edgerton Highway from Milepost 82.6 Richardson Highway gives you a few more options for Alaska fishing vacations in this area: Three Mile Lake - A 19-acre lake at elevation 750'. Has Arctic Grayling and Rainbow Trout. Has road access and parking in paved turnout by lake. 29.7 (47.8km) miles on Edgerton Highway to the turnout. Town Lake - A 33-acre lake at elevation 600'. Has Rainbow Trout and Long-nosed Sucker. 35.1 miles (56.5km) to the middle of Chitina. Has road access and parking. Silver Lake - A 500-acre lake at 1200' elevation. It is on private property but has an access road and parking. Has Rainbow Trout and Slimy Sculpin. Follow Edgerton Highway to Chitina. 9.3 miles (14.97km) on McCarthy Road (rough gravel) to lake. Access trail to lake and also to Van Lake (below). Strelna Lake - A 290-acre lake at elevation 1050'. Has Silver Salmon, Slimy Sculpin and Rainbow Trout. Follow Edgerton Highway to Chitina. 10.6 miles (17.06km) on McCarthy Road (rough gravel) to pull off on north (left) side of road. Has steep 1/4 mile (0.4km) access trail to lake. Sculpin Lake - A 190-acre lake at elevation 1200'. Follow Edgerton Highway to Chitina. 10.8 miles (17.38 km) on McCarthy Road to pulloff on South (right side). Has short, 1/4 mile (0.4km) access trail from pull-off. Camping available at private campground. Van Lake - A 280-acre lake at elevation 2400'. Has Rainbow Trout and Slimy Sculpin. Follow Edgerton Highway to Chitina. At Mile 11.1 McCarthy Road. Has 1/4 mile (0.4km) access trail from trail at south end of Silver Lake (see above). Alaska Fishing Vacation Opportunities going back onto RICHARDSON HIGHWAY and SOUTH TO VALDEZ: Squirrel Creek Pit Lake at SRS - A 5-acre lake at elevation 1500'. Has Burbot, Rainbow Trout, Arctic Grayling. Has road access, parking and camping area. At Mile 79.6 Richardson Highway. Access road and parking, camping facilities. Worthington Lake at SRS - A 52-acre lake at elevation 2312'. Has Arctic Char and was stocked some years ago with Rainbow Trout. Has road access and parking at Mile 27.5 Richardson Highway. Has steep turnout on east side of Highway, at the lake. Thompson Lake next to Blueberry SRS - A 23-acre lake at elevation 2030'. Has road access and parking. Not stocked in several years but may have good-sized Arctic Grayling. At Mile 23.6 Richardson Highway. Take gravel access road which also goes to Blueberry Lake State Recreation Site. Alaska Fishing Vacations in the VALDEZ NARROWS: Lots of great fishing in the three Bays which have State Marine Parks with State cabin rentals and tent campsites. The surrounding land is also part of the Chugach National Forest, so has USFS Cabin Rentals and tent campsites. Jack Bay in SMP - Approximately 15 miles south of Valdez, so it is a fairly short trip by float plane or boat. The bay is in a fjord with steep mountains on all sides. An island in the middle of the bay has tent campsites on the southeast side. There is also a Forest Service cabin rental here. Has good Pink Salmon fishing and Silver Salmon in creeks. Shoup Bay at SMP and Sawmill Bay at SMP - Also in the Narrows. Check for State cabin rentals or tent campsites in these parks. They are reachable by boat or plane from Valdez. Alaska Fishing Vacations in CORDOVA AREA and PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND: Martin Lake - Is fly-in only, 42 miles (67.6km) east of Cordova. Excellent fishing for Salmon, Dolly Varden, Rainbow Trout, Cutthroat Trout. Fish in streams and lake. Forest Service cabin rental available with rowboat to get around lake. One of the best Alaska fishing vacation places in the area. Shelter Bay - On Hinchinbrook Island. Has Pink Salmon, Chum Salmon, Silver Salmon, Cutthroat Trout, Dolly Varden and Char. To protect Silver Salmon runs, the limit has been reduced to one per day and one in possession. But that's enough for a good dinner, right? The outlet channel of Shelter Bay is a great for Salmon and Trout. The inlet creek at far end of bay is good Pink, Chum Salmon and Dolly Varden. Brown bears like to fish here, too, so watch out for them and follow the bear rules. Forest service cabin rental available. Softuk Bar on Oceanfront - Is 45 miles (72.4km) southeast of Cordova. This seafront area is good for digging razor clams as well as Pink and Silver Salmon fishing. Creeks provide freshwater fishing also. USFS cabin rental available.
