Alaska fishing vacations IN THE CENTRAL and SOUTHCENTRAL REGION to ANCHORAGE and WHITTIER Areas – Following the Glenn Highway from Glennallen, through the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, through Anchorage, and along the Seward Highway to Whittier. It includes the islands and fjords in Western Prince William Sound, not reachable by road.

Elevations are listed when above 1000 feet. The first section covers Alaska fishing vacations at higher elevations. Starting near Glennallen, here's a few Alaska fishing vacation spots:Tex Smith Lake - A 15-acre lake at elevation 2400'. Has Rainbow Trout. Has road, parking in pull-off on north side of highway and short trail to lake. At Mile 162 Glenn Highway. Alaska Fishing Vacation spots in the LAKE LOUISE AREA on GLENN HIGHWAY: The following are reached from the road into Lake Louise Area (north side of highway) at Mile 159.9 Glenn Highway. Junction Lake An 18-acre lake at elevation 2482'. Has Arctic Grayling. Just a short distance up Lake Louise Road. Turn into pull-off on the right side of road. Crater Lake - A 19-acre lake at elevation 2636'. Has Arctic Char and Rainbow Trout. Take Lake Louise Road 1.1 miles (1.77km) to gravel turnout on left, for parking. A short trail down a steep hill goes to the lake. Little Crater Lake - A 2-acre lake at elevation 2616'. Has Rainbow Trout. Same directions as for Crater Lake (above), then take the 1/4-mile (0.4km) trail around Crater Lake to Little Crater Lake. Old Road Lake A 1.5-acre lake at elevation 3084'. Stocked with Silver Salmon at one time. Currently has Rainbow Trout. Take Lake Louise Road 5.2 miles (8.37km). On the right (east) side, take the Old Road 1/4 mile (0.4km) to the lake. It's on the left. Round Lake - A 2-acre lake at elevation 3114'. Has Arctic Char and Rainbow Trout. Same directions as Old Road Lake (above) but is on the opposite side of Old Road. Tiny Lake - A 3-acre lake at elevation 2535'. Has Rainbow Trout. Follow Lake Louise Road 6.5 miles (10.46km). Take the dirt road (Oil Well Road/Mendeltna Creek Trail) on the left side of Lake Louise Road, 1.5 miles (2.4km) to trail on left (south) side of road. Trail is 1/4 mile (2.01km) to the lake. Peanut Lake - So-called because it's shaped like a peanut! A 12-acre lake at elevation 2650'. Stocked with Silver Salmon at one time. Currently has Rainbow Trout and Slimy Sculpin. Take Lake Louise Road 6.5 miles to dirt road (Oil Well Road/Mendeltna Creek Trail) on left side. Go 2 miles (3.22km) to trail on south (left) side of road and take 1/4 mile trail to lake. Peanut Lake is behind 40 Foot Lake. Forgotten Lake - A 13-acre lake at elevation 3053'. Has Burbo and Arctic Grayling. Take Lake Louise Road 7 miles (11.27km) to pull-out, east of road. Park in pull-out and take short trail to lake. Connor Lake - A 14-acre lake at elevation 2446'. Has Arctic Grayling. Take Lake Louise Road 16.2 miles (26.07km) to trail on left side of road. Has short access trail to lake. Alaska Fishing Vacation spots continuing on the GLENN HIGHWAY southwest to PALMER area: DJ Lake - A 4-acre lake at elevation 2394'. Has Rainbow Trout. On south side of Glenn Highway at Mile 157.5, take the 1/4 mile (0.4km) trail to lake. Gergie Lake - A 69-acre lake at elevation 2208'. Has Long-nosed Sucker and Rainbow Trout. On south side of Glenn Highway at Mile 155, park in paved pull-out. You can also park on shoulder of the highway. Take the 1.5 mile (2.42km) trail to lake. Ryan Lake - A 32-acre lake at elevation 2444'. Has Rainbow Trout, Whitefish and Long-nosed Sucker. Park in pull-off on south side of highway, at Mile 149 Glenn Highway. Take the short trail from pull-off to lake. Weiner Lake - A 21-acre lake at elevation 1980'. Has . At Mile 87.6 Glenn Highway, park in pull-out on highway. Or at Mile 87.5, take short dirt road to the right, to a simple boat launch and limited parking. Long Lake in SRS - A landlocked, 106-acre lake at elevation 1487'. Stocked with Rainbow Trout and Arctic Char. Burbot, Lake Trout and Long-nosed Suckers are also reported being present here. At Mile 85.3 Glenn Highway. Has parking, boat ramp and picnic area. Ravine Lake - A 12-acre lake at elevation 1850'. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. At Mile 83.3 Glenn Highway, go 0.8 miles (1.29km) north on gravel road to lake access on right side. Park on shoulder and take short, steep trail to lake. Much private property around lake. The following Alaska fishing vacations take place at elevations below 1000 feet. Slipper (Eska) Lake - A 9-acre lake. Formerly stocked with Arctic Grayling. Currently has Rainbow Trout. At Mile 60.9 Glenn Highway, go north on Jonesville Road 2 miles (3.22km) to gravel road. Go left 0.2 miles (0.32km) to parking and simple boat launch. The gravel road parallels north side of lake. Seventeen Mile Lake - A 100-acre landlocked lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout and Arctic Char for your Alaska fishing vacation. Only a short distance from the highway and fishing is good. At Mile 57.9 Glenn Highway go 1.2 miles (2.42km) on East 58 Mile Road, then 1.7 miles (2.74km) on North 58 Mile Road (name changes-E Stayton Ave, N Granite View Dr), left on Twin Hills Lane 0.3 miles (0.48km), right on Seventeen Mile Boulevard, 0.2 miles (0.32km) to Wishbone Place. Go right 0.2 mile (0.32km) to large parking/boat launch area, on easement. Wolf Lake in SRA A 62-acre lake. Formerly stocked with Silver Salmon and Arctic Grayling. Currently has Rainbow Trout. At Mile 41.8 Glenn Highway, go east on Palmer-Wasilla Highway 4 miles (6.44km) to Trunk Road. Go right 1.1 miles (1.77km) to Bogard Road. Go left 0.3 miles (0.48km) to Engstrom Road. Go right 2.5 miles (4.02km). Take short trail to lake. Limited parking. Much private property around lake. Alaska Fishing Vacation spots in the Kepler-Bradley SRA: - the following 5 lakes are in this Recreation Area. Canoe Lake in KB Lakes SRA - A 21-acre lake. Stocked with Arctic Grayling and Rainbow Trout. At Mile 38 Glenn Highway, go north on Coleen Sreet a short distance to "Y" in road. Left at "Y" on Bradley Lake Avenue a short distance to Green Jade. Right on Green Jade a short distance to parking and short trail to lake. Non-motorized or electric motorboats only. Much private property around lake. Bradley Lake - A 45-acre lake. Stocked with Arctic Grayling and Rainbow Trout. At mile 37.3 Glenn Highway, go north on Kepler Drive short distance to simple boat launch. Kepler Lake is accessible by boat from Bradley Lake taking short connecting channel between lakes. Canoe rentals available at private campground. Non-motorized or electric motorboats only. Kepler Lake - Can also be reached from Mile 36.4 Glenn Highway. Enter Kepler-Bradley Lakes State Recreation Area on north side of highway. Take short trail to Kepler Lake and fishing dock. Stay in State Recreation Area at both entrances. Most shoreline is privately owned. Matanuska Lake in SRA - A 62-acre land-locked lake. Stocked with King Salmon, Rainbow Trout and Arctic Char. At Mile 36.4 on north side of Glenn Highway. Has parking and short trail to fishing docks at lake. Non-motorized or electric motorboats only. Most shoreline is privately owned. Eklutna Lake in Chugach State Park - A 3,520-acre lake. Has . At Mile 26.3 Glenn Highway, take Eklutna exit and follow Eklutna Road about 10 miles (16.09km) to Recreation Area. Has parking, picnic and camping areas. All types of boats allowed. Mirror Lake - A 62-acre lake. Has Silver Salmon, Rainbow Trout, Arctic Grayling and Arctic Char. At Mile 23.6 Glenn Highway, take the Exit to parking at Mirror Lake Park. Alaska Fishing Vacation Spots, continuing south through Anchorage, along the Seward Highway to the town of Whittier. Bird Creek in Chugach State Park - 26 miles (41.84km) south of Anchorage. Has Pink Salmon in June and July, Silver Salmon in August. Alder Pond - A 6-acre shallow lake. Previously stocked with Rainbow Trout. At Mile 48.1 Seward Highway, take Portage Valley (Glacier) Road 1.25 miles (2.01km) to dirt road on right. Follow dirt road to "Y", then stay left, a short distance to lake. The following Alaska Fishing Vacation places are in West Prince William Sound. Access is by boat from Whittier and/or chartered plane from Anchorage, Seward or Cordova. Each is at the location of Alaska Cabin Rentalsby the US Forest Service in Chugach Forest, or in a State Marine Park. Surprise Cove in SMP - On western side of Cochrane Bay. There are two lakes as well as saltwater fishing. Has tent camping areas. Can be reached by boat or float plane. Coghill Lake, Lagoon and freshwater stream - Excellent salmon fishing in season. Lake is located at College Fjord, about 37 miles (59.55km) northeast of Whittier. Reachable by boat with 3-mile hike to lake, or float plane on lake. Cabin coordinates - +61° 4' 56.00", -147° 51' 40.00". Harrison Lagoon and Lagoon Creek - Located on west side of Port Wells, about 29 miles (46.7km) northeast of Whittier. Pink Salmon in August or try Shrimp pots. Reachable by boat or float plane. Cabin rental available but boat not provided. Paulson Bay - Northeast of Whittier at Port Wells. Saltwater fishing for Chum or Pink Salmon in late July and August. Bottom fish (like Halibut) or Shrimp also available. Cabin rental available but boat not provided. Pigot Bay and freshwater streams - Another one in Port Wells. Pink Salmon fishing in late July and early August in saltwater or streams. Halibut and Red Snapper near the Bay and west shore of Esther Island. Dig for Butter Clams on gravel beaches at head of Bay. This one has a little diversity for your Alaska fishing vacations.
