Alaska Fishing Vacations
Seward and Resurrection Bay

Alaska fishing vacations in the EASTERN KENAI PENINSULA, going to Seward and Resurrection Bay.

NOTES: Milepost numbers on the Seward Highway start from Seward. So the first one listed is the first one you'll reach, going south on the Seward Highway.
Lake elevations are listed when above 1000 feet (304.8m).

For definitions, abbreviations, contact and other general information, see Alaska Fishing Vacations, general information.

Fishing vacation spots starting at the north end of the Kenai Peninsula following the Seward Highway:

Tenderfoot Creek - Has Dolly Varden and Rainbow Trout. At Mile 46 Seward Highway near Summit Lake Lodge.

Upper Summit Lake - A 258-acre lake at elevation 1300'. Stocked with Rainbow Trout and has Dolly Varden in it. Has two access points: 1) At Mile 46 Seward Highway, take short road to the USFS CG at Tenderfoot Creek with parking and boat ramp. 2) At Mile 45.5 Seward Highway, park in paved turnout on east side of highway. Lake is close to the highway.

Rainbow Lake - A 15-acre lake at elevation 1300'. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. At Mile 47.9 Seward Highway, go south on Snug Harbor Road 10 miles (16.09km) to parking area. On left side of road is a 1/2-mile (0.8km) trail to the lake.

Carter Lake - A 48-acre lake at elevation 1486'. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. Park at National Forest trailhead at Mile 33 Seward Highway. Follow trail approximately 2 miles (3.22km) to lake. This is a steep trail as it climbs almost 1000' (304.8m) in that distance.

Vagt Lake - A 43-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. At Mile 25.1 on the east side of Seward Highway, is a small parking area for the Vagt Trailhead. This is at the south end of Lower Trail Lake which is next to the highway. Follow the trail 1.5 miles (2.41km) to Vagt Lake, east of Lower Trail Lake.

Long Lake - A 15-acre Lake at elevation 1000'. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. Has 2 access points: 1) At Mile 16.1 Seward Highway, park in turnout, east of highway. On west side of highway, follow the well-used, steep, unofficial foot trail 0.75 mile (1.21km) to lake. 2) At Mile 13.1 Seward Highway, west of highway follow the trail 1 mile (1.61km) to a "Y" (fork). Keep to the right, following Meridian/Long Trail 0.4 miles (0.64km) to another "Y" (fork). Keep to left and follow trail 4.5 miles (7.24km) to Long Lake.

Meridian Lake - A 15-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. At Mile 13.1 Seward Highway, park and take Grayling Lake Trailhead, west of highway. Follow trail 1.8 miles (2.9km) to Meridian Lake, keeping to the right at two forks (Y) in trail.

Troop Lake - A 27-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. At Mile 12.9 Seward Highway, park in turnout, east of highway and follow trail approximately 3 miles (4.83km) to lake. Avoid using old trail at Mile 10.9.

Lost Lake - Has good-sized Rainbow Trout. Road to Lost Lake is just north of Seward, west of the Highway. Check with USFS for directions and "Dale Clemens" cabin rental near lake.

These two are for a VERY REMOTE Alaska Fishing Vacation:

Lower Paradise and Upper Paradise Lakes - Has Arctic Grayling. About a 20 minute flight from Seward, they are located east of the Seward Highway in a remote area. No trails to this lake. Boat provided with USFS cabin rentals (cabin coordinates: +60° 20' 56.00", -149° 4' 19.00 and +60° 22' 7.00", -149° 0' 34.00").

Alaska Fishing Vacations south of Seward in Resurrection Bay:

Thumb Cove in SMP - About 7.5 miles (12.07km) from Seward on the east side of Resurrection Bay. The State Marine Park is on the south side of the cove. A good place for Salmon fishing. The whole cove is within the park and tent camping may be done along the beaches. State cabin rentals are also available. Reachable by plane or boat. Water taxi service available in Seward.

Sandspit Point in SMP - About 12 miles (19.3km) from Seward on the north end of Fox (Renard) Island. There is a fine sand beach on the north end of a 1/2-mile long spit (northeast side of island). Another good area for camping and Salmon fishing, as it has some protection from the open Bay.

There is another State Marine Park on the south end of Fox Island and two more on the eastern side of this eastern peninsula bordering Resurrection Bay. These are all much more exposed to weather but you'll find some good fishing in these areas also. A variety of marine life makes great saltwater fishing, for your Alaska fishing vacations.

Here's more information on any National Parks, State Parks, Campgrounds, State Cabin Rentals, or USFS Cabin Rentals mentioned above, to help plan your Alaska fishing vacation.

If you don't mind crowds of people, probably the most popular place for an Alaska fishing vacation is on the Western Kenai Peninsula.
