Alaska Fishing Vacations in the WESTERN REGION: Starting at Wasilla,lakes along the Parks Highway are all in lowland, rather swampy areas.
That means lots of mosquitoes but it's also a great place for fishing! NOTE: Milepost numbers on the Parks Highway start with 35.3 at Junction of Parks and Glenn Highways. Is next to an active gravel pit. At Mile 36 Parks Highway, take Trunk Road exit, left across overpass to Frontage Road. Turn left and go 0.3 miles (0.48km) to limited parking and simple boat launch. Most shoreline privately owned. Wasilla Lake - A 374-acre lake. Has Rainbow Trout. At Mile 41.7 Parks Highway. Go into the City Park on the right. No boat launch. Finger Lake in SRS - A 362-acre lake. Stocked with Arctic Char, Arctic Grayling, King Salmon, Rainbow Trout. At Mile 41.8 Glenn Highway, go east on Palmer-Wasilla Highway 4 miles (6.44km) to Trunk Road. Go right 1.1 miles (1.77km) to Bogard Road. Go left 0.7 mile (1.13km) to Finger Lake SRS. Left a short distance on gravel road to parking and boat launch. Most shoreline privately owned. This one gives some variety for an Alaska fishing vacation. Memory Lake - An 84-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout, Arctic Char, King Salmon. Northern Pike have also been caught. At Mile 42.3 Parks Highway, go north on Wasilla-Fishhook Road 3 miles (4.83km) to Schrock Road. Go left 1.1 miles (1.77km) to Hebrides Road. Go right a short distance to Iverness Drive. Go left a short distance to small parking area and simple boat launch in easement on right. Most shoreline privately owned. Some variety here and a good Alaska fishing vacation lake. Reed Lake - A 20-acre land-locked lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout and Arctic Grayling. At Mile 42.3 Parks Highway, go north on Wasilla Fishhook Road 7.3 miles (11.75km) to Welch Road. Go left 0.4 mile (.64km) to short trail on right in easement. Most shoreline privately owned. Several Alaska fishing vacation lakes at Mile 48.7 Parks Highway: Golden Lake - A 13-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. At Mile 48.7 Parks Highway, go east on Pittman Road, 0.3 mile (0.48km) to Golden Avenue. Go left 0.3 mile (0.48km) to gravel road on left. Short distance to parking and lake access. Most shoreline privately owned. Beverly Lake - A 42-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. At Mile 48.7 Parks Highway, go east on Pittman Road, 1.4 miles (2.25km) to Beverly Lake Road. Go right 3.1 miles (4.99km) to Kalmbach/Beverly Lake parking and short trail to lake on easement. Most shoreline privately owned. Locked gate is only to prevent vehicles from entering foot trail. Kalmbach Lake - A 125-acre lake. Stocked with Silver Salmon, Rainbow Trout. Directions same as Beverly Lake (above). From parking, short trail to lake on easement. Most shoreline privately owned. Bruce Lake - A 27-acre land-locked lake. Stock with Rainbow Trout and possibly has Arctic Grayling. Follow directions to Beverly/Kalmback Lakes (above) going past entrance to those lakes. Go left on Windy Bottom Drive a short distance, to short trail in easement on left. Most shoreline privately owned. Alaska fishing vacations, continuing north on Parks Highway: Lalen Lake - A 92-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. At Mile 48.8 Parks Highway, go east on Meadow Lakes Road 2.5 miles (4.02km) to Meadow Lakes Drive. Go left 1/2 mile (0.8km) to Skyview. Go left 0.4 mile (0.64km) to easement road on right with limited parking. Short distance to lake and simple boat launch. Most shoreline privately owned. Seymour Lake - A 229-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. Same directions as Lalen Lake (above), going past Skyview. Trail and boat launch in easement on right. Most shoreline privately owned. Dawn Lake An 12-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. At Mile 51.6 Parks Highway, go south on Johnson Road 1.5 miles (2.41km) to Dawn Lake Drive. Go left 1/2 mile (0.8km) to Dawn Lake Court. Go right a short distance to end-of-road parking and trail across wooden walkway to lake. Most shoreline privately owned. Alaska Fishing Vacations off of Big Lake Road, at Mile 52.3 Parks Highway, west side: Big Beaver Lake - A 161-acre lake. Stocked with . Take Big Lake Road 3.4 miles (5.47km) to Beaver Lake Road. Go right 2.5 miles (4.02km) to parking and simple boat launch in easement. This road winds around and goes through a housing area. Most shoreline private property. West Beaver Lake - A 103-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. Take Big Lake Road 3.4 miles (5.47km) to Beaver Lake Road. Go right 1.0 mile (1.61km)to W Lake Boulevard. Go left 2.0 miles (3.22km) to Rogers Road. Go right 1.3 miles (2.09km) to W Private Ozark Lane. Go right short distance to limited parking and public access in easement on right. Most shoreline privately owned. Little Beaver Lake - A 44-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. Take Big Lake Road 3.4 miles (5.47km) to Beaver Lake Road. Go right 0.8 miles (1.29km) to Lakes Boulevard. Go left 1.8 miles (2.9km) to Rogers Road. Go right 2 miles (3.22km) to Knapp Drive. Short distance to lake access in easement on right. Most shoreline privately owned. Rocky Lake in SRS - A 59-acre land-locked lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. Take Big Lake Road 3.4 miles (5.47km) to Beaver Lake Road. Go right 1/2 mile (0.8km) to Rocky Lake SRS on left with parking and boat launch. Most shoreline privately owned. Alaska fishing vacation lakes on south Big Lake Road (Going past the "Y" at 3.6 miles (5.79km) from the Parks Highway): Homestead Lake - A 17-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. Go left at "Y" 2.1 miles (3.8km) to Echo Lake Road. Go left 0.8 mile (1.29km) to Sun Drive. Go right a short distance to Alta Drive. Go right a short distance to lake access trail. This is through a private subdivision. Most shoreline privately owned. Marion Lake - A 113-acre land-locked lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout and Arctic Char. Go left at "Y" on South Big Lake Road 5.2 miles (8.37km) to Marion Drive. Go left for 1/2 mile (0.8km) to parking area and steep trail to lake on easement. Most shoreline privately owned. Diamond Lake - A 139-acre land-locked lake. Currently stocked with Silver Salmon, Rainbow Trout. Go left at "Y" about 9 miles (14.48km) (turn right at 4-way stop where it becomes W Susitna Parkway) to Raines Drive. Go left 1.2 miles (1.93km) to parking and short trail to lake on easement. Most shoreline privately owned. Crooked Lake - A 250-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. Also has Silver Salmon, Slimy Sculpin, Three-spined Stickelback and various Whitefish. Go left at "Y" until you reach a 4 way stop. Go right at stop on W Susitna Parkway 3.7 miles (5.95km) to Timberline Drive. Go right 0.7 mile (1.13km) to public access. Most shoreline privately owned. Alaska Fishing Vacations, continuing on the Parks Highway, north of Big Lake Road: Morvro Lake - An 87-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. At Mile 54.3 Parks Highway, go west on Delroy Way 0.7 mile (1.13km) to power line easement with very limited parking. Most shoreline privately owned. Loon Lake - A 108-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. May have Silver Salmon from former stocking. At Mile 54.8 Parks Highway, go east on Cheri Lake Drive 0.4 mile (.64km). Turn right on Ray Street for short distance, then left to lake access with limited parking and simple boat launch. Prator Lake - A 98-acre landlocked lake. Has Northern Pike and being stocked with Arctic Char. Access is available through Castle Public Park. At Mile 56.6 Parks Highway, go east on King Arthur Drive 2.4 miles (3.86km) to Castle Drive. Go left a short distance to parking and boat ramp in City Park. Most shoreline privately owned. Bear Paw Lake - A 45-acre lake. Stocked with Silver Salmon and Rainbow Trout. At Mile 57.0 Parks Highway, go east 1.4 miles (2.25km) on King Arthur Drive to Magic Avenue. Go right 1/2 mile (0.8km) to access road, in easement on right, and simple boat ramp. Most shoreline privately owned. Alaska Fishing Vacations at Nancy Lake SRA - A number of lakes and streams are not listed. - Nancy Lake at SRS A 761-acre lake which has its own natural fish population. At Mile 66.5 Parks Highway, go a short drive west on a gravel road takes you to Nancy Lake SRS. Quite large Northern Pike have been found here. Other local fish are Rainbow Trout, Silver and Red Salmon, Burbot, Dolly Varden and various Whitefish. Has boat ramp and parking. Four state cabin rentals are on this lake.
- Tanaina Lake in SRA - A 109-acre lake. Has Northern Pike and perhaps Rainbow Trout, if the Pike didn't wipe them out. Catch all the Pike you can use. This is one of many Alaska fishing vacation lakes that was invaded by Northern Pike and wiped out it's natural fish population. Not currently being stocked. At Mile 67.3 Parks Highway, go west on Nancy Lake Parkway 4.8 miles (7.72km) to canoe system trailhead. Has parking and foot trail.
- Rhein Lake in SRS - An 85-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. At Mile 67.3 Parks Highway, go west on Nancy Lake Parkway 5.0 miles (8.05km) to parking and short trail to lake on right side of road. Non-motorized craft only. All shoreline is PUBLIC.
- North Rolly Lake in SRS - A 122-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout to replenish wild stock. At Mile 67.3 Parks Highway, go west on Nancy Lake Parkway 6.2 miles (9.98km) to parking and 1/2 mile (0.8km trail ) to lake on the right. Non-motorized craft only.
- Redshirt Lake in SRA - A 1,181-acre lake. Another Alaska fishing vacation lake invaded by Northern Pike, destroying most Rainbow Trout , so catch lots of Pike! At Mile 67.3 Parks Highway, go west on Nancy Lake Parkway 6.6 miles (10.62km) to parking area just before South Rolly Lake CG. Fly-in or hike on 3.0 mile (4.83km) trail to tent campsites. Has 4 state cabin rentals on this lake. Most shoreline privately owned.
- South Rolly Lake in SRS - A 108-acre lake. Not currently being stocked because of Northern Pike invasion. May have Rainbow Trout. Definitely has Northern Pike. At Mile 67.3 Parks Highway, go west on Nancy Lake Parkway 6.6 miles (10.62km) to South Rolly Lake CG parking. Has boat launch. Non-motorized or electric craft only.
The next two Alaska fishing vacation lakes are reached from the Nancy Lake Parkway, but are not in the SRA: Honeybee Lake - A 58-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. At Mile 67.3 Parks Hwy, go west on Nancy Lake Parkway 0.9 mile (1.45km) to Long Lake (Crystal Lake) Road. Go right 0.8 mile (1.29km) to gravel road (Honey/Lynn Road) on right. Go right 0.6 mile (.97km) to lake parking on left side of road, opposite from Lynne Lake on right. Short trail leads to lake. Most shoreline is privately owned. Lynne Lake - A 70-acre lake. Stocked with Arctic Char and Rainbow Trout. See directions above (Opposite end of road from Honeybee Lake). Most shoreline is privately owned. A small creek connects these two lakes. Alaska Fishing Vacations continuing along Parks Highway, north of Nancy Lake SRA: Willow Lake - A 143-acre lake. Has Rainbow Trout but not currently being stocked. At Mile 69.7, go west at Willow Community Center. Its a short distance on easement to lake with parking and simple boat launch. Most shoreline privately owned. Vera Lake - A 111-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. At Mile 70.8 Parks Highway, go west 2.0 miles (3.22km) on Willow Creek Parkway to Crystal Lake Road. Go left 2.4 miles (3.86km) to Deshka Landing Road. Go right 1.0 miles (1.61km) to limited parking and 4-wheel drive easement trail on left, short distance to lake. Most shoreline privately owned. Boot Lake - A 34-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. At Mile 70.8 Parks Highway, go west 2.0 miles (3.22km) on Willow Creek Parkway to Crystal Lake Road. Go left 2.6 miles (4.18km) to Vera Road. Go right 0.75 mile (1.21km) to public trail on easement. Trail is short but boggy. Most shoreline privately owned. Additional Alaska fishing vacation lakes are in the area. But the roads wind around, names change and directions can be complicated. Just past Vera Drive, going to Boot Lake, Florence Lake is on the right and if you continue South on Crystal Lake Road, you'll also find Crystal Lake. Both are stocked with Rainbow Trout. Kashwitna Lake - A 161-acre lake. May have Rainbow Trout and Silver Salmon from former stocking. Northern Pike are present also. At Mile 76.4 Parks Highway, use paved pullout west of highway for parking and lake access. Most shoreline privately owned. Middle Caswell (#3) Lake - A 33-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. At Mile 87.9 Parks Highway, go east 0.7 mile (1.13km) on Hidden Hills Road to East Caswell Lakes Road. Go left 3.3 miles (5.13km) to Silver Salmon Drive. Go right 3 miles (4.83km) to parking on left. Most shoreline privately owned. Alaska Fishing Vacations in the Talkeetna Area: Benka Lake - A 123-acre deep lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout and Arctic Char. At Mile 98.7 Parks Highway, go east on Talkeetna Spur Road, 3.1 miles (4.99km) to Yoder Road. Go right 0.6 mile (0.97km) to Lakeview Street. Go left 0.7 mile (1.13km) to parking area and boat launch. Most shoreline privately owned. Tigger Lake - A 19-acre landlocked lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. Also has Slimy Sculpin, Three-Spined Stickleback. At Mile 98.7 Parks Highway, go 10.8 miles (17.38km) on Talkeetna Spur Road. On right, opposite Woodpecker Avenue, go 1/2 mile (0.8km) on gravel easement road to parking and short trail on left to lake. Foot trail and parking were developed as an Eagle Scout project. A parking area with an access trail has been put in on west side of lake, accessed by a subdivision road. "X" Lake - A 101-acre landlocked lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout but check fishing regulations. It may be "Catch and Release" fishing only. At Mile 98.7 Parks Highway, go east on Talkeetna Spur Road 12 miles (19.31km) to Comsat Road. Go right 0.5 mile (0.8km) to sign for Talkeena Lakes picnic area for parking and lake access. All shoreline available. Christiansen Lake - A 179-acre lake. Stocked with Silver Salmon, Rainbow Trout. Popular for winter ice fishing. Same directions as for "X" Lake (above) but go past the picnic area 0.3 mile (0.48km) to Christiansen Lake Road. Go left 0.7 mile (1.13km), then right on lake access road. Short distance to parking and boat launch. Most shoreline privately owned. "Y" Lake - A 40-acre landlocked lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout and may have Arctic Grayling from former stocking. Same directions as for "X" Lake (above). Parking and short trail to lake is on the right. All shoreline is available. Alaska Fishing Vacations, continuing on Parks Highway, north of Talkeetna area. You now will be leaving the lowlands for higher elevations: North Montana Lake (Friend) Lake - An 82-acre lake. Stocked with Rainbow Trout. At 99.3 Parks Highway, park in pull-off on south side (west) of Highway and cross Highway to lake. Most shoreline privately owned. Stay near Highway access point. South Montana (Friend) Lake - A 56-acre lake. Currently being stocked with Rainbow Trout. Park in same pull-off as for North Montana Lake. You'll find a short trail to lake from parking area. Most shoreline privately owned. Stay in public easement area. Alaska Fishing Vacations in Denali State Park - All five species of Salmon, Rainbow Trout, Arctic Grayling, and Dolly Varden are in streams. Byers Lake has Lake Trout, Burbot and whitefish. Spink and Lucy Lakes have Lake Trout. Mile 180 Lake - A 31-acre lake. Has Arctic Grayling and Rainbow Trout. Not currently being stocked. At Mile 180 Parks Highway, park in one of two paved pull-outs on west side of road and follow short trail to lake. Summit Lake - A 400-acre lake. Has Arctic Char, Lake Trout and Round Whitefish. Not currently being stocked. At Mile 201 Parks Highway, 0.25 mile (0.4km) east of Highway to parking area and lake access.
