Alaska Fishing Vacations
Fairbanks and Northern Areas

Find places for Alaska fishing vacations in the NORTHERN REGION. This is from around Delta Junction (official end of the Alaska Highway), to Fairbanks, the area surrounding Fairbanks and north from there:

For definitions, abbreviations, contact and other general information, see Alaska Fishing Vacations, general information.

If you want to take this information with you, PRINT This Page

Delta Clearwater River - Drive 8-1/2 miles on Clearwater Road from mile 1415, Alaska Highway-this is before you reach Delta Junction. Or drive 11 miles on Jack Warren Road from mile 268, Richardson Highway. This River lives up to its name. It is very clear and provides excellent fishing for Arctic Grayling, Whitefish, and Salmon. It also connects to the Tanana and Goodpaster Rivers. Located in Clearwater SRS which has a boat launch, camping and picnic areas.

If you want to go SOUTH on the Richardson Highway at Delta Junction, for an Alaska fishing vacation: (Instead of north to Fairbanks)

Fielding Lake - This Site is about 65 miles from Delta Junction, at Milepost 200.5, Richardson Highway. Because it is at an elevation of 2,973', it is above treeline and the lake often has ice on it until late July. Located in Fielding Lake SRS which has a boat launch, campsites and a State cabin rental. The lake has its natural stock of Arctic Grayling, Lake Trout and Burbot for some excellent fishing.

For Alaska Fishing Vacations, Continuing North to Fairbanks from Delta Junction:

Quartz Lake - Just 10 miles north of Delta Junction. At milepost 277.8, Richardson Highway, take a 3-mile road to this area which has 2 lakes. Located in Quartz Lake SRA which has boat launches, fishing docks, campsites and picnic areas.

Quartz Lake is stocked annually with large numbers of Rainbow Trout and Coho Salmon which grow to an excellent size. Every other year it is also stocked with Arctic Char and Chinook Salmon. Daily bag and possession limit is 10 per day in any combination, only one of which may be longer than 18 inches. Lost Lake is stocked every year with 40 broodstock and 1000 rainbow trout. Bag and possession limits are 10 per day / 10 in possession with no size limit.

There are also two State cabin rentals (one is available year around) and ice fishing hut rentals for winter use.

Birch Lake - Reach it from a military recreation area road at Milepost 305.2 of the Richardson Highway (about 57 miles from Fairbanks). The lake is stocked with Rainbow Trout, King Salmon, Silver Salmon, Grayling, and Arctic Char for year around fishing. Located in Birch Lake SRS which has a dock and boat launch making summer fishing easy. In the winter, State ice fishing hut rentals are available. Birch Lake has large RV and tent campsites, as well as one really nice winter cabin rental. It also has a day use area.

Harding Lake - is at Milepost 321.5, Richardson Highway, 40.5 miles south of Fairbanks. Located in Harding Lake SRA which has a boat launch for motorboats and other watercraft, many large campsites, picnic areas, parking areas, and other recreational areas. Lake trout, Arctic Char and Burbot are fishing possibilities. Pike fishing is closed, but check current regulations.

Salcha River - Fishing site is at Milepost 323.3, Richardson Highway, about 39 miles south of Fairbanks. Located in Salcha River SRS which has a boat launch, campsites, and a winter cabin rental. Fishermen commonly catch King Salmon, Arctic Grayling and Northern Pike in the Salcha River.

Some Alaska Fishing Vacation Spots Northeast of Fairbanks

Chena River - runs through the middle of Chena River State Recreation AREA, a 1/4-million-acre State Park about 30 miles northeast of Fairbanks. Arctic Grayling is one of the natural inhabitants of this river but were fished to a very low level some years ago. Because of that, you are currently only allowed to do catch and release fishing for Grayling in the Chena. The regulations allow artificial, single hook lures only, without bait.

But if you're looking for a fish dinner, you won't be disappointed. There are four ponds in this recreation area that are kept stocked with Rainbow Trout and Arctic Grayling, just so you can catch and eat them. They are located at mileposts 30, 42.8, 45.5 and 47.9 along Chena Hot Springs Road.

You'll find a number of Park cabin rentals in this Recreation area as well as campgrounds for RVs. There are also tent camping sites and tents can be pitched in the gravel bars on the Chena River. Be sure to camp above the high water mark!

Alaska Fishing Vacations North of Fairbanks:

Lower Chatanika River - At mile 11, Elliott Highway. The Lower Chatanika SRA has 2 campgrounds. There are campsites, picnic sites and a picnic shelter. Has fishing access and boat ramp on the Chatanika River.

Upper Chatanika River - At mile 39, Steese Highway. The Upper Chatanika SRS has campsites and picnic sites. A road to a Chatanika River gravel bar makes a place for picnics, tent camping or fishing. You can also do an all-day river float on rafts or canoes and end at the Lower Chatanika Recreation Area, and do some fishing on the way!

Here's more information on Alaska Parks, Alaska campgrounds and State Park cabin rentals mentioned above, to help plan your fishing vacation.

That's all the Alaska Fishing Vacations that I have for the Northern Region at the moment. Here are some more Alaska fishing vacation opportunities from the Alaska Highway to Valdez Area. Wherever you end up going, have a great time fishing!
