ALASKA HIGHWAY MAPS are listed for each of the major highways. Each map has a number of points marked to give you a little more information about what is along the highway.

I've also provided links to take you to pages that have information you might want to coordinate with the map. The pages will open in a separate window so you can look at both the map and page information.

Instructions For Online Maps: Zoom in on each map to get a more detailed view. Left click on each bubble marker to read the notes that will identify the marked point and give you some additional information on it. Besides familiarization with names and places, it will be easier to understand directions given on the various pages of this website.

ALASKA HIGHWAY MAP #5:

Find campgrounds, State cabin rentals and State recreation areas.

Seward Highway - This highway ended at Potter railroad station in 1950, just 15 miles south of Anchorage. But within the next 2 years the road was completed and you could drive all the way to Seward, as well as take the train. In order to build the highway and the railroad along Cook Inlet, the edge of the cliffs had to be blasted off. So you'll see rock walls going fairly straight up, close to the highway. 127 miles (204.39km) long.

ALASKA HIGHWAY MAP #6: Find campgrounds, State cabin rentals and State recreation areas.

Sterling Highway - This highway has improved considerably over the years. I remember it took me 12 hours to drive from Anchorage to Homer one time. That was more than a few years ago as you might guess. It is about a 220-mile drive and is considered to be about a 4 1/2 hour trip these days, in the summer, that is! 143 (230.14km) miles long.

ALASKA HIGHWAY MAP #7: Find campgrounds, State cabin rentals and State recreation areas.

Klondike Highway - South - A 98 (157.72km) mile, not-so-long highway, but has a very steep climb out of Skagway to the mountain summit at White Pass, one of the original trails to the Klondike gold fields. Paved and open year around nowadays, but I would prefer the Haines Highway in winter.

ALASKA HIGHWAY MAP #8: Find campgrounds, State cabin rentals and State recreation areas.

Haines Highway - Originally named the "grease trail" by Alaskan Natives who traded Hooligan fish with interior natives. Later named the Dalton trail when used in the gold rush days. This highway follows the original trail through the mountains to the Klondike gold fields in the Yukon Territory. The summit is about 3500 feet. It is a paved, 146 mile (234.96km) long highway and has been open year around since 1963.

ALASKA HIGHWAY MAP #9: Find campgrounds, State cabin rentals and State recreation areas.

Denali Highway - Though this highway has been around since 1957 - it was the first road to go to Mt. McKinley and the gold mining town of Kantishna - it is still almost all gravel. The snow is plowed in winter but there is no guarantee that it will be passable. You may run into a sudden snow storm and have to wait an awful long time for snow plows to come along. So it is basically a summer road. 134 (215.65km) miles long.

We are basically done with highway maps for what I would consider major highways in Alaska. However, there are still some roads called "highways" that we haven't touched on yet. So we'll look at a few more roads that go into some of the less well developed areas of Alaska. You'll find another Alaska road map or two, for roads that are mostly "summer only" and mostly gravel...
